Santa Fe Places 4th in National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation

Santa Fe Joins 9th Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation

Mayor Alan Webber of Santa Fe, NM is joining mayors across the country in asking residents to show their commitment to water conservation by taking part in the annual Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation — and in return residents can win $3,000 toward their home utility payments, water saving fixtures, and hundreds of other prizes. Winners can also nominate a local charity to receive a 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE to serve the community.

The annual challenge, which runs until August 31, is a non-profit national community service campaign that encourages leaders to inspire their residents to make a series of simple pledges at mywaterpledge.com to use water more efficiently, reduce pollution, and save energy.

“We love our way of life in Santa Fe, and we want to pass it down to successive generations. That means making sustainability a part of everything we do, especially where water is involved,” said Mayor Webber. “We have some of the best water conservation rates in the country, but challenges like this give us a chance to get even better. I know we will.”

Last year, residents across the country pledged to reduce their annual consumption of water by three billion gallons. By saving water at home, residents are helping achieve the goals of the Sustainable Santa Fe 25-Year Plan, approved by Santa Fe City Council in 2018 as a pathway to a thriving community where climate impacts are neutralized, natural resources are abundant and clean, and sustainable economic activity is generated through enhancing social equity and the regenerative capacity of the environment.

“We’ve demonstrated our commitment to conserving water for many years,” said Mayor Webber. “Let’s all take the pledge and showcase our commitment on a national stage – and maybe even win something in return!”

To participate, residents go to mywaterpledge.com , and then make a series of online pledges to conserve water on behalf of Santa Fe. Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge (in their population category) have a chance to win $3,000 toward their home utility bills, and hundreds more eco-friendly prizes including Toro Irrigation Smart Controllers and ECOS home cleaning products. In addition, residents can nominate a deserving charity from their city to receive a 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Students and teachers are encouraged to take part, as well.
